After finally finishing Doom 2016, I figured I'd come back and try the first area again and see how my fighting techniques have improved. Getting a lot of weapon powerups, playing Doom VFR all the way through, and adding a couple Overwatch Dualshock analog stick grips to my controller, I am able to control myself better, and have gotten much more used to how the Doom character handles.

I tend to get close, then strafe quickly into line and fire my shotgun, rather than try to be too accurate about it. That works well for me. Working with the weapons playing through the whole game, I finally got the pattern of using the shotgun at a fairly close distance so that I don't waste its potential. And I spend very little time standing still trying to line up a shot - I strafe across to line up instead, after I get close, because the strafing also helps me avoid attacks if my shot misses. The Overwatch analog grips really help, too - those Dualshock analog sticks are just too short to be comfortably accurate with.

As for my impressions of Doom 2016, after having finally beaten it, the graphics and sounds are stellar. But the game mechanics, map designs, environment atmosphere, and game situations are all very matter of fact. Doom 1 and 2 had traps, eerie lighting effects, walls that suddenly open and unleash demons upon you, and very often a mottled look that oozed considerate atmosphere. I preferred the consideration I could put into how I maneuvered in Doom 1 and 2, ducking in and out from behind pillars and corners to confront the various enemies. In Doom 2016, all I could do to stay alive is just constantly run around. Here's hoping Doom Eternal brings some of those elements into the sequel.
