Doom Map Talk #1:Transduction (TNT Revilution)
What's that? Another new series? Indeed, this one I have had on my mind since I first began my journey (or however you'd call it) in Doom Wads/Mods, But I've also been fascinated by the maps of wads too, so I have decided to set up DMT or Doom Map Talk to start as a series sometime next year in addition to my planned Season 7 of Half-Life Mods, Season 9 of Doom Wads/Mods under-production and many other series I have.. This one will be a little different honestly, Here, I step out of my usual to explain what makes a map great, what makes a map bad, my memories of various maps, how I see the current map I'm talking about and much more.
I remember well when I first played Evilution on my DOS PC, It was part of "Final Doom", A game that I still hold high in regards, While I know that many do not like Evilution or have mixed views about it due to it's open boxy rooms, a game breaking bug in Pharaoh, and other issues.. I played it to death and loved it like all the other Doom games and IWADS, I know of TNT 2 Devilution which still remains unfinished and I doubt we'll ever see it in our lifetimes..the lazy bastards they are.
Anyway, I was browsing the Cacoawards for 2017 and wasn't expecting very much but I was blown away when I saw the Mordeth award for TNT Revilution, It won that award and I think it deserves it 100%, From what it appears TNT 2 Devilution is a mess that should've been shelved when it failed to even materialize, What sprang from that was Revilution which contains a lot of map authors including Eternal and Phobus, The wad has one hell of a story involving it taking place after the events of Evilution.
According to it's txt file, The ending of Evilution was just a warning, The Demons know a lot more then we thought about our technology, They were just waiting for a good time to try again and take not just earth but all of the planets over, The "Demon-Spitter" we killed in "Last Call" had a tracking device so many many more ships similar to what landed in Evilution are on their way, In short, A Demonic Revilution has begun, It's our goal to shut them down.
The 3 episodes of TNT Revilution are truly truly breathtaking for their dynamic themes, Episode 1 is us dealing with the first arrival of the ships, Episode 2 places us among the asteroids circling the solar system and Episode 3? Heh.. Hell, What do you exactly expecting playing Doom? What sticks out is how the entire Revilution team made Evilution but much bigger, badder and more evil.
Episode 2 kicks off with "Transduction", Ho...ly fuck, It doesn't seem like 4 years have passed so fast but this map is the first time in a long time since "Unloved" that I've actually felt afraid and anxious playing Doom, The jumpscares in this map are unlike any other, lowering walls, lights coming on, teleport traps, and new textures add to the atmosphere.
The Intermission screen for Episode 2 notes that We've lifted off from the base we were at in a Spaceship and the "Demon Ship" we are chasing has crippled it so we need to land and find parts for the ship at some abanonded UAC Bases in the asteroid belt around Jupitar, But I tell you what.. You think they are abandoned? Think again..
A homage to not only "Wormhole" but also "Crater", Maps 4 and 12 from Evilution, This map strikes you in the face with silence.. And it's nail-bitting Midi "Ionian Isolation" which was composed by Eris Falling, There's just...something sinister about it:What sounds like a Gieger Counter blipping away, Echoes of space and erie piano chords just give it a horror feel that Evilution never really had in any of it's music tracks.
The map is much scarier then Wormhole or Crater combined, A custom "Kill Us" Door still sends a chill down my spine when you look at it in the darkness of the base, I remember the first night I played this map when it was raining and I had the lights out, I jumped out of my chair a few times because this map is not like others in the wad, This wad is DESIGNED to make you feel fear.
Once all 3 keys are gained we must location the central core of the facility and here's...where Transduction will stick in my mind until the day that I die, and I probably will think about it forever...whether I like it or not, The lights come on in the core and a TV Screen lowers into the water pit taking us...To a evil hellish version of the core room, I nearly suffered a panic attack first time I played Transduction when the arch-viles were released, We then enter darkness and warp through another TV and find ourselves at the end of the map, What a fucking ending there.
The 4 mappers of Transduction: Megamur, Dobu Gabu Maru, Kyka, and StupidBunny managed to make a level that plays with your mind and makes you feel like someone is watching, And Eris Falling's midi just makes it that more scarier... Transduction is the only map out of the 32 for this megawad that has horror to it's name, I believe it is one of the finest Doom maps of the modern era.
