Doom. The original. The game I said I wouldn't play on stream, as it's just too common, too popular. Eh, I'm not really playing the original though. I'm playing with the Ray Tracing mod, to show it off. And oh boy, it looks pretty. It also looks incomplete. We've encountered some bugs with it, no surprise there. The game itself was never designed for this. The game uses sector based lighting, but ray tracing needs actual light sources. So they had to muck around quite a bit to get lighting to work. When it does, it is AMAZING. When it doesn't, it is pitch black, or retina destroying. What works in one area doesn't in another. Because these maps aren't meant for this.

Still, as a proof of concept, this is phenomenal. I love it, I'm glad it exists, I would really like to see it implemented in Heretic or especially Hexen, games that really seem like they can do more with dynamic lighting. The fantasy setting seems to lean heavier onto over the top shiny effects better, though sci-fi certainly has its moments. The changes in the lighting here to make this a different game in some areas, and can highlight the horror aspects just a little better. I would LOVE to see maps designed with the Ray Tracing limitations and advantages in mind.

But there's a reason why this is a mod and will never be official. It had to be jammed in to fit. When it does, it's amazing. But it's pretty patchwork. Beautiful patchwork, but patchwork none the less. I'm still glad this exists, as it's an excuse to go through the original levels agian, something I haven't done in years. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
