I have watched videos of the old alphas being played by other youtubers and looked at images of the said alpha versions, But when I found this mod, I just had to bring it into season #12 to showcase another example of a hidden gem.
The Original Doom Alpha Unleashed sadly is dead but there are several versions on Moddb, I'm using the second demo which was released by author Borpo_The_Wizard on April 7th 2021. It's a mod for Doom II that re-creates many things from Alpha V0.2 through V0.5 of the Doom alpha builds, and wow, Borpo did a lot of work despite these being just demos.
Firstly, we begin in a room with a bunch of allied marines around a card game which reference the Doom bible's concept of having more than one playable character in older builds, instead of a pistol we have a rifle, and the melee attack is a bayonet attached to the rifle, Shotgun is heavily based Tootsie toy shotgun model. Zombiemen and Shotgunners are "Dead" UAC marines with red blood painted on them, Imps throw a different looking fireball and Demons explode which was traced to one of the earliest builds.
The overall demo maps here are heavily designed based on the original Doom bible layout for the episodes where hellspawn invades the UAC bases on Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos but also the UAC base on a planet named Tei Tenga, The maps look yeah, for that time bare but they are a breath of fresh air to take in and think about what was happening at that time, The HUD that I had put doesn't work too well in GZdoom and looks quite hideous to boot but despite that, I loved this mod for being one of the few to tackle the older builds, and show us what happened before the official launch.
