Double Dragon (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Accolade's 1992 arcade port beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Double Dragon.
Well, this port was a little late to the party: the original arcade game was already several years old by 1992. But that's alright, it's a 16-bit home version of the classic beat 'em up, on a machine designed exactly for such purposes, right? And just look at how awesome those screenshots are!
You'd be justified in thinking that. Even before you found out how awesomely the music came out on the Genesis hardware.
So why haven't I just said it's awesome already? Because... it isn't. The controls are super-sluggish, which is pretty deadly for how quickly you can zip around the screen, and it's compounded by a screen that doesn't scroll unless you're at the very edge of it, leading to - you guessed it - unavoidable attacks and pitfalls! Wee! As if the game weren't a stiff enough challenge to begin with. It's too bad that the gameplay doesn't match the great presentation. Not by a long shot.
It's not terrible. It's completely playable. It feels off, sure. It's not an awful game though. I'm just really down on it because it could have been so much better. I'd probably like it more if it wasn't for the comparison, but still. If this is the option at your disposal, Genesis Double Dragon is definitely better than no Double Dragon. Or Double Dragon on the CPC. The broken version, not the reasonably good one. But, you know.
So yeah, that's about all I've got for this one.
