Otocky (NES/FDS) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Ascii's 1987 musical rhythm-shooter for the Nintendo Famicom Disk System, Otocky. It was released only in Japan.
This video shows all stages of the "game mode".
Otocky is probably unlike anything else you've ever played, in the best possible way. Technically it's a shooter, but the music really takes the center stage in this title. Like the DS launch title Electroplankton (which was in fact designed by the same person, Toshio Iwai), the gameplay is largely an extension of the music itself.
You shoot bubbles (the direction you shoot dictates the pitch it will play at) to collect notes in each stage, and you need to get five complete notes at the bottom of the screen to move on to the boss. You can change instruments by picking up certain power-ups, and each have a very different tone and speed at which you can play while using them. I tried to make the playthrough as "musical" as I could - you can play it as straight shooter, but you'd miss all the fun and creativity that goes into creating the soundtrack as you play!
It has been likened to Rez, mainly because of the musical influence, but I don't know if I'd say they are similar beyond the basic concept. I've never played anything else quite like Otocky, and it's incredible how fresh and modern it still feels today, 30 years after its initial release!
