A playthrough of Bandai's 1986 NES game, Chubby Cherub.

Chubby Cherub has no ending, so I play to the end of the twelfth stage (the last of the unique levels) and then cut to the game over screen.

Chubby Cherub is a arcade-style (yet console exclusive) action game that is a heavily localized version of the Japanese original, named Obake no -Taro: Wanwan Panniku (Ghost Taro: Barking Panic) that was based off of the manga of the same name. In the original, Q-taro, a ghost, has to go flying through areas, eating food to maintain a flight gauge while fighting (rabid?) dogs, all in order to save his friends. Chubby Cherub is exactly the same, except you play as a hideous version of Cupid. Every third stage has a boss "battle" where you have to grab the bone and throw it at him - this leads the dogs on-screen to savage him, freeing your friend.

There are a few extra scenes that can be accessed from most levels - the "hell" stages are all dark and pop-up when you fall off the bottom of the screen. The "heaven" stages can be reached by flying through the puffing smoke stages to the top of the screen. They don't provide much besides a new background and a few more bits of randomly dropped food to eat, so while I do show both, I don't go into those areas much at all during the video. They just prolong the experience, and I wasn't interested in doing that.

The problem is that the game just isn't very compelling. It's fairly easy once you figure out a few strategies, it's ugly as sin, and the music is annoying. I'm usually okay with the mediocrity Bandai's titles tend to champion - many of them are pretty fun. Chubby Cherub, however, is a very early effort that is better off just being left alone.

I guess this is lucky for you collectors out there - who cares that the game goes for such absurd amounts of money when you wouldn't want to play it anyway? Trust me, if you are on the fence, don't do it. Unless you just have to have every game, there are so many better titles you could purchase with the same money.

No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
