Sesame Street 123 (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Hi Tech Expressions' 1989 game for the NES, Sesame Street ABC.

8:47 Astro Grover
Here's a title that I imagine many of you guys have some fond memories of. It was the first of a pair of Sesame Street games developed by Rare, Ltd. for the NES - the other was Sesame Street ABC, release some nine months prior. Both were rereleased on an official compilation cart, Sesame Street ABC & 123, in 1991.
So, if Hi Tech's badge upon the cart doesn't inspire confidence, you can take comfort in known that it is a Rare product from top-to-bottom. Sure it's a kid's game, but the graphics and music are absolutely brilliant here. The music WILL stick in your head forever - I played this with my little sister WAY back (89 or 90, I'm guessing) when she was getting ready to go into kindergarten, and I still know every damn song in the game by heart. The animation is also pretty amazing, given its age and the hardware it's running on. Rare really seemed to master and genre they handled - even if its 128k ROM leaves it a bit light on content, it's all quality.
Ernie's Magic Shapes has Ernie pulling colorful shapes out of a hat, and they have to be matched with the other shape floating above his head. They get more complex as you move on, going from single-blocks to shapes made up of several different pieces. Astro Grover involves counting and doing simple arithmetic with little aliens to restore neighborhoods and to launch rockets.
Obviously it's not got quite the appeal when you already know how to count, but for little kids it's perfect, and for adults who played this as little kids, it's a game that is exactly as you remember it. And that's a good thing.
