Quest for the Shaven Yak Starring Ren Höek & Stimpy (Game Gear) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Sega's 1994 license-based platformer for the Sega Game Gear, Quest for the Shaven Yak Starring Ren Höek & Stimpy.
Ren & Stimpy for the Game Gear - what an oasis of playability after the NES and Game Boy games! It doesn't go crazy with innovative (or cheap and gimmicky) mechanics, and it's not trying to impress you with the Game Gear's abilities to do neat tricks. It's a simple left-to-right platformer that rarely involves more than avoiding enemies and running to the exit.
And that's certainly not a bad thing when it's so well done. The controls are super solid and do exactly what you expect, when you expect them to. The graphics look awesome, with simple, colorful renderings of the classic duo and some fun animations, and the sound, though chirpy thanks to the Game Gears PSG synthesis, does its best to reproduce those amazingly catchy songs from the show.
Besides being a bit too long for a game without a password system, it's everything you could want in a handheld. It's simple, it's reasonably slow paced, and the graphics are crystal clear. If you are a fan of Ren Hoek and Stimpington J. Cat, do try this. It's a far better use of your time than the 8-bit Nintendo R&S games, for sure.
