The German version of the Dragon Age 2 demo leaked out a bit early (official demo release is February 22th), and naturally I had to check it out immediately.

The easy tutorial-like parts included in the demo ensures that the focus is mostly on those improved action RPG mechanics...and given just how satisfing the realtime approach to combat feels this time around I don't really mind. There's an impressive speed, fluidity and elegance here which not only was nowhere to be found in DA:O but, amazingly enough, even seems able to compete with what the best of pure action RPGs have to offer in terms of fast and visceral melee encounters. At the same time, the pause-oriented and much more slow-paced approach appears to be just as viable as in DA:O (and will presumably be absolutely essential on higher difficulty settings, which are not included in the demo). By now I'm really beginning to hope for the best-case scenario in which DA2 manages to provide something remarkably close to the best of two worlds; i.e. a game which is as tactical or as action-oriented as the player him- or herself wants it to be. An unrealistic expectation? Sure, but if the demo is any indication Bioware is at least on the right track here...

Note: The beginning of the demo is extremely easy (which is justified in interesting and highly original ways from a narrative standpoint) and gives an overpowered impression of the main protagonist which is entirely intentional, but rest assured that it all gets a bit more challenging eventually.
