On May 27, 1986 game designer Yuji Horii, mangaka Akira Toriyama, and well known composer Koichi Sugiyama released Dragon Quest in Japan, the first game in what would be known within the Dragon Quest series as the Roto Trilogy, or Erdrick Trilogy in the west. Far after its novelty period as better games had already released in the west, Dragon Quest's slow localization would bring the game west as Dragon Warrior in 1989 with many NES gamers receiving the game for free with their Nintendo Power subscription in 1990.

In the west Final Fantasy with its faster localizations would supersede the Dragon Quest series' popularity, but in Japan the Dragon Quest series was king. Sales exploded in Japan with the release of Dragon Quest 3, the last game in the Erdrick Trilogy, where the game shattered sales records, led to hundreds of truancy arrests for students skipping school to purchase the game day 1, and became a cultural phenomenon in Japan.

In this video I talk about Dragon Quest from my own experience, and from the way the game was received in Japan. At the end I talk about the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, and Dragon Quest's influence in popular anime, manga, and other videogames.
