Dragon Warrior [NES] Playthrough #13, Castle Charlock: Erdrick's Sword
This is video #13 in my Dragon Warrior playthrough. Now that Heorot has acquired the Rainbow Drop, he sets out from Rimuldar towards the Isle of Dragons. In the northwestern corner of the southeastern continent, there is a one-tile gap between the continent and the Isle of Dragons to the west. When the hero uses the Rainbow Drop, it creates a bridge! There are swampy areas in the mountains leading to Castle Charlock, so Erdrick's Armor is a good thing to have.
When the hero reaches Castle Charlock (time index 2:10), I recommend keeping Repel on and running like the wind from everything and anything. There are many enemies here that can wipe the deck with our poor hero at Level 15. On the main floor, to move on, the hero goes around to the northwest, east, south, and north up the damage floors. (I *really* hope you have Erdrick's Armor...)
It's not really obvious, but the structure of orange blocks is a throne (time index 4:10). Behind this, the hero can search to find a secret stairway! This leads down to level B1.
The basements of Castle Charlock are very dark, so the hero needs to use the Radiant spell. On Level B1, the hero just has to go counterclockwise along the outside wall of the room until he reaches a stairway leading down to B2 (time index 5:25).
Level B2 looks a little more complicated, but the layout is pretty simple. Unfortunately, stronger enemies, such as Blue Dragons, begin attacking down here. To progress, the hero has to go clockwise around the central structure until he reaches the down staircase two tiles west of the staircase he originally used to reach B2.
Down on level B3 (time index 6:45), there are several ways to go, and it is easy to get lost. To get to Erdrick's Sword, the hero has to go around west, north, west, and south to a down staircase. This staircase leads down to level B4 (time index 7:25).
The hero will arrive in the southwest corner of level B4. Down here, the hero should go to the northeastern part of the room and then south inside the inner wall to a stairway leading up (time index 7:45).
Back up on B3, the hero will be in an enclosed area in the middle of the floor, and there is only one way to go. The stairs to the northwest go up to B2 (time index 8:00). In the northeast corner of B2, he will be right beside the next stairway, which goes up to B1.
In the northeast corner of B1, there is again only one way to go: southwest to a stairway that goes back down to B2 (time index 8:20).
Down in the central part of B2, fortune will smile upon Heorot. The treasure chest here contains Erdrick's Sword! As you may expect, this is the best weapon in the game.
Now, it is time to get the heck out of Castle Charlock with the Outside spell. Fortunately, my hero also has enough MP to Return to Tantegel and rest up.
This new weapon will make it easier to grind for experience down in Hauksness. That Axe Knight drops a good bit of experience. Unfortunately, it also hits pretty hard, so the hero will have to leave to rest pretty often.
At Level 16 (time index 16:05), my particular hero gets a nice boost to MP.
At Level 17 (time index 16:50), the hero learns a valuable and long overdue new spell: Healmore. This spell restores a great deal more HP than Heal. It is more cost-effective for restoring a lot of lost HP.
At Level 18 (time index 17:50), the hero gets some stat increases.
At Level 19 (time index 19:25), the hero learns his last spell: Hurtmore.
At Level 20 (time index 20:40), the hero gets some more stat increases.
Thanks for watching!
