This is video #02 in my Dragon Warrior II playthrough. In this video, I start the game and name my hero Heorot, as I did in the previous game.

The game starts with a brief prologue. Unfortunately, the peace in the kingdom of Moonbrooke is shattered as the forces of Hargon attack.

A lone soldier escapes the sacking of Moonbroke and manages to make it northeast to Midenhall, only to collapse at the entrance. The soldiers help him up to the throne room so that he can tell his tale of woe to the King of Midenhall. Things do not sound good.

The King's son is our hero, Heorot. It turns out Heorot is of the noble line of Erdrick the Great. The King assigns him to seek out companions and foil Hargon's dirty plans. All right, pops, will do. After several long minutes, we gain control of our hero (time index 6:35). This is a long intro for such an early game.

This game has a command menu similar to the previous game, but there is a major improvement here: we no longer need to open the menu just to go downstairs. Good stuff.

On the first level, the King gives Heorot a chest containing 50 Gold and a Copper Sword. What, King, you're sending your only son and heir into the world armed with inferior equipment? Anyway, people of Erdrick's line are also in Cannock and Moonbrooke. And Heorot will certainly need their help. He will be a master of powerful weapons and heavy armor, but he will have no command of magic whatsoever.

After equipping himself, Heorot begins exploring Midenhall Castle (time index 7:45). The inhabitants' advice is as close to a tutorial as you get in this game. In this game, you have to equip weapons and armor, or you will not be able to use it. There is a Travel Door here that teleports Heorot to a far corner of the world. Since Heorot is all alone for now, it may be a good idea to pick up a Medical Herb or two with the massive fortune that the King just gave him. Fortunately, enemies in this game will now drop treasure chests in addition to experience and Gold.

In the eastern wing of the castle, you will notice two of the different types of doors in the game (time index 11:00). As you may expect, we need keys to get through them. Fortunately, the keys in this game do not break when they are used like in the previous game. A definite improvement.

As in the previous game, the hero can save his game by talking to the King. There are also NPCs in some large towns that allow the hero to save. Talking to a castle's King or a town's save NPC will also set that location as the Return target in this game. For instance, if you have most recently saved at the King of Cannock, Cannock Castle will be set as your Return target.

Out on the world map, it is time to get some experience close to Midenhall Castle (time index 11:15). Our little prince starts out at Level 1. As things stand, simply getting to the town of Leftwyne will be hazardous at this level. Fortunately, the enemies around Midenhall are pretty easy, even when they show up in groups. There are mostly Big Slugs and Slimes. Note that when enemies are grouped together, you cannot target a specific enemy in that group. The ability to target a certain enemy in a group does not come until Dragon Quest VIII.

It is not long before Heorot reaches Level 2 (time index 13:50) and Level 3 (time index 14:40).

Unfortunately, Heorot can't rest for free even in his own home. He's got to sleep in the blasted Inn for 4 Gold. Midenhall must be in a deep depression to gouge its own crown prince like this.

After a little leveling, Heorot explores to the south (time index 17:35). There are some tougher enemies on the island south of Midenhall, such as Iron Ants and Drakees. The Healers will be especially annoying. At the southeast tip of the island, there is a shrine (time index 18:54). The robed gentleman here gives useful advice on finding the first key in the game, the Silver Key.

On the way back to Midenhall, Heorot reaches Level 4 (time index 21:30). A short time later, he reaches Level 5 (time index 23:25).

Thanks for watching!
