(English below) Gameplay de Dune II: The Battle for Arrakis, también conocido como Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, desarrollado por Westwood Studios.

Gameplay of Dune II: The Battle for Arrakis, also known as Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, developed by Westwood Studios. It is one of the first real-time strategy games as we know them, in which building a base, collect resources (in this one the spice, of course) and generate units to fight the enemy. It was inspired by the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive game Herzog Zwei.

I've always found it curious that both the first Dune, by Cryo interactive, and this "sequel" by Westwood Studios, came out the same year and were so different, both produced by Virgin Games. In wikipedia can be read why this happened. In any case, two very interesting games and considered great classics of their time.

Of course, it is obvious that this Dune II has been very outdated in the gameplay aspect and is clumsy and not very intuitive to play today. Command & Conquer (of which I also have a recent gameplay) improved the formula of this game, which became more and more polished in later C&C releases. In any case, it's clear the influence of this Dune II in the whole genre and that's why it's a historical game.

I am playing the game on a PCem emulating MS-DOS 6.22. It also works perfectly in DOSBox. This is the CD version, by the way, but it doesn't make a big difference with the floppy version. It is currently not sold anywhere, due to licensing issues I guess, so it is abandonware. There are also versions for Amiga and Sega Genesis / Mega Drive.
