Gameplay of Dune, Cryo Interactive's adventure and strategy game released in 1992, which was the first prominent videogame based on Frank Herbert's novel (and David Lynch's 1984 movie). Since the new Dune movie has just been released, I thought I'd do a series of gameplays from classic video games based on the franchise.

It is known that the soundtrack of this game, composed by Stéphane Picq, was specially designed to be played with the Adlib Gold, a premium sound card of the time for performance and price, and PCem emulates this sound card, even with the surround module that was purchased separately. So I play on a PCem emulating MS-DOS 6.22 and with that sound card.

This game has an improved version on CD, but this I show is the floppy disk version, because for some reason the music is extremely low in this version, almost inaudible, I don't know if it's a bug of emulation or of the game. Anyway, with AdLib Gold the digital sound effects are lost, I checked and apparently it is something normal that happened in the original hardware, and one of the attractions of the CD version are the digital voices. And I found it more interesting to show the music in its highest quality.

I think that it is impressive how it sounds, very electronic of course, but we must think that we are talking about a game of 32 years ago. That there was a sound card that reproduced sound of such quality was impressive. Although of course, this being emulation probably doesn't sound exactly the same. But I think it's great that you can emulate it and have at least something similar to the original experience, without having a retro PC with the actual card. And I imagine that, like everything retro, it must be highly revalued.

This video was twice as long, but I've cut it for two reasons, the first is that I prefer to keep the length of these gameplays to an hour or so, and I don't think anyone would have been interested in watching such a long video anyway. Second, I played until I found Chani, which is where the best song of the soundtrack plays, but I get a copyright notice there, incorrectly by the way (youtube, please improve your AI), so I'm going to put it in a separate video so it doesn't affect the whole video.
