Early 'Dial A For Arson' Level - Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko Beta
An early look at the beta design of the "Dial A For Arson" bonus level, which is in an almost complete state, but has a few minor differences. Since this is a timed level, I'm not able to give you a good look at everything individually as I have done with the Sphinx levels, so you'll have to do a bit of reading.
This stage is probably the least interesting in terms of beta content, but I figured I'd document changes anyway.
Starting off, the Gex "phase in" transition thing hasn't been implemented, and there's an invisible timer pickup that cannot be collected (I assume, going off of object names. This object probably would've extended time in the stage.) The music is the "Media Dimension" theme, from Gex 2, which I don't mind, plus there's no annoying ticking sound for the timer, so that's bonus. You'll notice few of the collectables are in different locations, one of these differences is that you can find a Fly pickup behind Gex at the very start, which is absent in the final design. There's no Taxi near the dead body, which if I remember correctly, you could jump on top of it for more Flies in the final. Speaking of objects that give Flies in the final, the pigeons found here don't drop Flies when hit, which is interesting because in the cut Villa level, they do. There are also no chairs on the rooftops to jump onto.
As for level aesthetic differences, there's not a whole lot. The play area is pretty much one to one with the final design, though the billboards and advertisements have changed. Notably, the advertisement piece at the start of the level was changed from an advert about cigars. I can't recall if this specific advert appears at all in other places in the final, but I think it's safe to assume it was changed because of the subject matter. The board by the dumpster was changed too. The "I'll Mug U" plate board in front of the el-train tracks uses a placeholder billboard from a different level. The el-trains themselves have two carriages, as opposed to one, and have a slightly lower quality texture design, but nothing drastic. The rooftop section, as mentioned prior with the lack of chairs, is very slightly different. There is also no secret room hidden within the wall that contains the Lost Tape pickup.
The collectable for getting all 50 Fly coins uses a placeholder block with the face of one of the devs as a texture, and it cannot be collected, so the level cannot be beaten. The object name is "DAPRO", or "a programmer", most likely. Despite this, this is so far the only bonus level in the current state of the game that can be "finished". The others either don't seem to spawn the final pickup correctly, or don't contain enough Fly coins to complete the goal legitimately. If you give yourself the "pickup", the level completes, and you get returned to the temporary hub.
