I hope that this 3D earthquake simulation will bring more awareness about the potential earthquake impacts on the West Coast of the US. The truth is that most buildings won't collapse in a major earthquake. However, masonry structures are prone to extensive damage when it comes to intense shaking. If you live close to a major fault in California, Nevada, Oregon or Washington state, you should seriously be considering getting an insurance that covers earthquake damage as well. The recent major quakes in Ridgecrest and Humboldt County are a reminder that the San Andreas fault is not the only source of imminent danger.

This video simulation was created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB - a structural simulation software) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures. It establishes constraining connections between rigid bodies that incorporate real world behavior and parameters. It has been developed at the Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland within the scope of EU Inachus FP7 Project (607522).
