The elementary OS distribution is being tested on Raspberry Pi single board computers. The desktop operating system runs on the latest Raspberry Pi computers and is currently available through the distribution's Early Access program. "We recommend Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 400 with 4 GB RAM at a minimum—but the more, the better. (We don’t even recommend less than 8 GB for computers with much faster CPUs, graphics, and storage.) Older models of Raspberry Pi (like the original, Raspberry Pi Zero, Raspberry Pi 2 series, and Raspberry Pi 3 series) are not supported; elementary OS requires the faster processor, additional RAM, and 64-bit architecture of the Raspberry Pi 4 series.
:: ONE MORE ::
The elementaryOS developers have announced their experimental build for ARM chips from the Raspberry Pi 4 series. That is, the support of this famous Ubuntu-based distribution, and with a very "mac" air, is coming closer to the SBC board. Therefore, if you already use elementaryOS on your PC, you should know that you can also do it on these boards.
This is not the first time that the elementaryOS project has entered the ARM domains. They already released their operating system for ARM-based chips in August of this year, so it could work with the Pinebook Pro. Now, its latest version, elementary OS 5.1 "Hera" is getting experimental support for the Raspberry Pi 4.
Linux has been running on ARM for a long time , and there are many distributions that do it specifically on the Raspberry Pi, as you already know. But now this other joins, for fans of Pantheon.
It's really not a novelty, you know that for several years, the main distributions (Arch, openSUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, ...) have been present on Raspberry Pi boards. But that changed after the release of the Raspberry Pi 4, although the new technical specifications of this SBC make it even easier to run these distros.
Now, little by little, the distros that already had support for other SBCs are also coming to the Pi 4, as is the case with elementaryOS, or Ubuntu, which a while ago also released its official 20.10 image for the Raspberry Pi 4.
If you are interested in testing elementaryOS on your Raspberry Pi 4 and don't want to wait, you should know that its developers have released a build under their Early Access Builds program . So you can already try the experience if you want to be one of the sponsors of the elementaryOS project. Although you can also download this build by following the instructions you can find on this GitHub repository site .
Of course, keep in mind that this is an experimental release , so don't expect wonders. Many things work correctly, but maybe some functions do not, or have some problems. For example, there are some graphical problems that need to be improved, as well as some glitches with the sound system ...
