Tails stands for "The Amnesic Incognito Live System" and uses the Tor network to anonymize the network traffic through whose node computers. It is designed as a live system for use on USB sticks or DVDs and specializes in anonymity and the protection of the privacy of its users. Debian 10.7 "Buster " serves as the basis for Tails 4.14 .
Smaller ISO image
After Tails 4.13 switched to Thunderbird 78.4.2 relatively late, the update to Thunderbird 78.5.1 now follows. Tor Browser has been updated to 10.0.7. Linux 5.9 is used for the kernel. The support of the Ledger hardware wallets in the Electrum crypto-currency app is new. The Unifont character set was removed, saving 8 Mbytes on the image. The Noto font, which has been in use for a long time, covers the characters of all supported languages.
Fixed bugs
In addition, some bugs could be fixed. The APT key for was deb.torproject.org updated so that an error does not occur when the Tor repository is updated . Another problem that was fixed concerned the root password for persistent mode , which under certain circumstances tried to force a root session without being asked. In addition, in the new version, Tails can use Nautilus to open the persistent area of another Tails stick . As always, the changelog reveals more details .
Security gaps closed
According to the announcement, Tails 4.14 closes many security holes, but this time they are not specified in more detail. Mostly these are security advisories taken over from Debian and gaps in Thunderbird, Firefox, Tor and Tor Browser.
Automatic upgrades to Tails 4.14 are supported from Tails 4.2, older versions must be updated manually . The release of Tails 4.15 is planned for January 26th, the roadmap shows further goals for the near future.
Future development
Among other things, improvements in the documentation, the development of more robust methods for updating, the switch to Wayland, sandboxing via Flatpak and the use of reproducible builds are on the developer's list. In addition, Tails should be completely accessible to visually impaired and blind people.
