There comes a fork of the fork. After all the controversy surrounding the end of CentOS as we know it, here's another option: meet Rocky Linux, a fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux from the original creator of CentOS. Therefore, Rocky Linux is a fork of RHEL and, consequently, of CentOS itself. Thus, the creation should please users concerned about the end of CentOS from next year, when it will be replaced by CentOS Stream .
As we said on the website, now with CentOS Stream, Red Hat just ended CentOS as we know it. And, as expected, people started using Red Hat to provide a viable, community-based alternative to RHEL.
:: A brief recap of the episode “CentOS Stream” ::
CentOS was a community-oriented project that was the fork of RHEL and acted as a downstream for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Shortly after IBM acquired Red Hat, a CentOS Stream distribution was introduced as an upstream to RHEL.
Now, in a shocking move, the board of CentOS and Red Hat have announced that they will shift their focus (and investments) to CentOS Stream instead of CentOS Linux.
So, with CentOS Linux changing direction from a downstream project to an upstream platform, what are your options?
You can choose openSUSE, Debian, Ubuntu or perhaps another RHEL fork. That's exactly where Rocky Linux appears .
:: Rocky Linux: a new community operating system for companies, forked from RHEL ::
Gregory M. Kurtzer , who is not by chance the creator of CentOS Linux, decided to bet on this new proposal. Therefore, this news points out that he must not have liked the change promoted by Red Hat at all.
Until the new fork arrives, however, users must migrate to other distributions like SUSE or Ubuntu Enterprise, even if they don't like it. This to continue with services that correspond minimally to what existed.
In that case, Rocky Linux can be the perfect replacement for users of CentOS Linux 7/8 after the end of support, if all goes well.
At the moment, there is no concrete information about Rocky Linux. However, there is already a GitHub page created by Gergory himself :
:: Here's what Kurtzer wants with Rocky Linux ::
Rocky Linux is a community operating system designed to be 100% compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, now that CentOS has changed direction.
