What makes interactive narratives emotionally compelling, and how can we consistently create them?

This talk presents a practical framework derived from my PhD research. I analysed the techniques of over 50 expert narrative designers using blogs, talks, interviews, panels and articles.

The study identified two key themes, emotional drivers and player expression, that underpin all interactive storytelling, along with five core categories: high-level conceptualisation, story structure, character design, choice architecture, and dialogue.

I show how all these elements interconnect and offer practical insights from worldwide experts.
