Testing is still in progress, but the results so far are promising. As you may or may not know, jumping is 99% automated in this game. Can't really jump (or gain height) unless there's a specific type of ledge that allows Monkey to do it. You also can't descend wherever you want because small invisible walls line the edges of ledges everywhere. With this new tactic you could say you are given more freedom concerning the part about descending... but even that is handy because the game was designed with the player's inability to jump autonomously in mind, and thus the invisible walls are not high at all.

I've done this glitch so far by climbing onto a ledge while holding down shield and staff buttons, then walking around invisible ledge walls to out of bounds. The explanation is that shielding cuts your climbing animation a bit short, allowing you at best to end up outside bounds. Then, in staff-mode, you can control your movement precisely where you want to, and can drop yourself at places where the game didn't want you to. The difficulty seems to vary between ledges a lot. Also, this glitch can sometimes work without having to use your shield at all. It seems there's some natural variance in how Monkey climbs up a ledge, and sometimes you end up outside bounds without any effort, sometimes not.

EDIT: aphox noted that (at least on PC) a variation of this glitch can cause Monkey to airwalk. Fun!
