Well, early Wheeler is pretty useless since you reach Wheeler quite easily even by the normal route, but at least it creates a few interesting side effects.

You can breach two walls to reach the area Wheeler is in early. At first he is not around since the game hasn't loaded him yet. You can't free him at this state, since the game complains that "it's not safe to do it yet". If you backtrack to the corridor you normally enter from, you suddenly hear a quip from Wheeler, and he appears. Backtracking further also loads the two enemies you have to kill in order for it to become safe to free Wheeler.

After that things work out pretty normally. However, if you had pulled the switch upstairs to open the next gate already, Wheeler skips a part of his predetermined routine and zips to the corridor ahead to wait for Alex to catch up.

And finally, an actually useful skip. After reaching Block A upstairs, you can get past the broken gate through the guard shed. Unfortunately the start of the wall breach wasn't captured on video, but you have to start it from quite left for it to work. After that you end up upstairs in front of Solitary Confinement, and are ready to skip the final puzzle as well, ending the prison section in no time.
