Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance - Anime Movie Review
Welcome to my review of the 2009 anime film, Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance. This is the second part in the four part Rebuild of Evangelion film series. Things begin to diverge from the original anime series in the very first scene with the introduction of Mari Illustrious Makinami who pilots Evangelion Provisional Unit 05 and then later in the movie, Unit 02. I really enjoyed Mari's character in this one, but I feel like they didn't know how to use her properly in the other two movies. We also get introduced to Asuka who goes by the name Asuka Langley Shikinami instead of the surname Soryu, which points to the fact that this is indeed a sequel series. I really enjoyed most of the battles, particularly the one with Shinji, Rei, and Asuka all working together and of course, the final battle against the Angel that merged with Rei. However, I think that the conflict with the infected Unit 03 was much better in the original anime series. It was still good here, and I get why they chose Asuka to pilot Unit 03 instead of Toji, but in my opinion it was not as graphic as the original. Just a minor nitpick. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and would rate it as my favorite in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. Stay tuned for my review Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo next week.
