Everything we know about Starfield, the new Bethesda RPG
This is everything we know about Starfield, the new Bethesda RPG!
The first thing that interests us are the Mods! Unsurprisingly Todd Howard himself confirmed that Starfield will indeed have Mod support, and though it wasn't specifically mentioned Mod support on Xbox I'm fairly confident that it will be included as well. There isn't other information about this topic yet, so I want to add that I would personally love if Bethesda found some way to improve the system behind Mods for Starfield, as many times the UI and searching functionalities of the Mods section are not the best thing in the world in Fallout 4 and Skyrim.
At the core of Starfield there will be exploration, and with a space setting there couldn't be a better theme, as the human species still has a lot of lingering un-answered questions about what's beyond our planet and our solar system. Bethesda has also mentioned that in Starfield will be the first Bethesda game in which we will get two times an epic world view “step out” moment, it is unclear how that could happen so I'm very curious to see what that will be about.
We also have a little information about some locations of Starfield: the “Settled Systems” is a 50 light years radius around our solar system where humanity lives, this portion of space features two major factions, the “Freestar Collective” and the “United Colonies”, who have recently stopped hostilities under an uneasy peace. The capital cities of these two factions have also been mentioned, the capital of the Freestar Collective is Akila City, and the capital of the United Colonies is New Atlantis. Of course there are other factions that can be encountered in Starfield, here are some short descriptions we have for them and also for the already mentioned factions:
- Ryujin Industries: a mega-corporation that can be a starting faction
- Crimson Fleet: pirates that you can join or betray
- House Va'Ruun: religious zealots
- Freestar Collective: based on a theme of space western fantasy
- United Colonies: a space republic
In Starfield the player will have a robot companion named Vasco. This robot is created by Lunar Robotics and built to aid humans in expeditionary space travel. Vasco's role will be focused on helping the player mainly in non-combat situations, but it is still equipped with some weaponry. It was also revealed as expected that there will be other companions and that Bethesda has improved the companion system to make it more interactive and believable.
Despite it being under developed and under appreciated, I always though that Oblivion's persuasion mini-game was a good idea that could have been built upon, and Bethesda seems to think the same! Starfield will in-fact feature a new persuasion system in which it really feels like you're having a conversation and in which you feel like you are trying to persuade someone. To do so Bethesda made sure that the player has risks when doing this action, so there isn't always something definetly right to say at any given time.
Some parts of Starfield will take inspiration from old hardcore RPGs. When talking about Starfield, Todd Howard explained that things like character backgrounds, traits, stats and so on take a page from old RPGs but have a new twist on them. My interpretation of this is that the perks and leveling system will receive an unexpected type of overhaul that will redefine how this game will be played compared to other recent Bethesda titles.
When comparing Skyrim to Starfield there are some things that we can note: the game's structure will be similar, Starfield features multiple factions that we as players will be able to join, and we will be who we want to be, making our journey in Starfield our own personal story. It was also said that Starfield will include more than 150000 lines of dialogue, which is more than double of Skyrim that had 60000 of them! As a minor note it was also confirmed that the game will be playable in both first and third person.
Starfield will be the first Bethesda game to be built with the new “Creation Engine 2”, but unfortunately we don't know how it differs from the older Creation Engine. It certainly looks like graphics have improved quite a lot, same goes for the lighting, but what I hope the most is that this engine will allow to install more Mods than what is available for Skyrim on Xbox, and that there will also be more hard drive space available to install them!
