Hello everyone and welcome to Music Theory with GUIM! In this installment we take a look at Franz Liszt's Freudvoll und Leidvoll (Joyful and Woeful). This is a lied composed for Voice and Piano and demonstrates a number of beautiful and chromatic harmonies, most of which stem from the use of Modal Interchange (at least during this initial analysis) by way of Parallel Minor and other advanced harmonic devices.
We look at only measure 1 through 15 in this harmonic analysis, but we'll return to this composition on numerous occasions.
This is especially so considering that Liszt published three different versions set to the same poem! All of which contain variations worth exploring!
So check out this video and explore some Music Theory courtesy of Liszt's chromatic harmony and potentially find a new set of tools for your own music!
