How Romancing Saga 2's Dungeon Theme Uses Minor Mode Harmony, Chromaticism, and Modulation
SUPPORT: Patreon.com/GUIM
In this installment of Music Theory with GUIM we're going to take a look at the first Dungeon Theme from Romancing Saga 2 on the Super Famicom which was composed by the excellent Kenji Ito! You can expect to pick up techniques for creating excellent Minor Mode Harmony that maintains a strong sense of direction throughout and uses Chromaticism for the sake of development and cohesion rather than just for the sake of flexing.
You can also expect to hear about the technique of modulation and how it can be used for more than just "changing keys." This is a very important concept that I believe a lot of people are skipping over. We talk about modulations, but not so much of why the contribute to the development of a composition beyond "adding variety."
This is a great theme and is excellent for anyone that is wanting to upgrade their skillset in the minor mode. It's not revolutionary and is, actually, quite conservative, but that's part of the charm. It takes standard material and makes it EXCELLENT!
