The final scenes set in a toy store subtly contrast innocence with the decadence of the wealthy elite, highlighting how ordinary people are treated as mere “playthings” by the powerful. In a moment laced with irony, Alice and Bill discuss their future while surrounded by toys, an unsettling hint at society’s manipulation of human relationships.
Through doppelgängers, repeated symbols, and ambiguous conclusions, Kubrick presents a critique of capitalism, social hierarchy, and the concept of personal freedom. Some see the ending as hopeful, showing Bill and Alice overcoming temptation and reconnecting, while others interpret it as a bleak message on societal control. Ultimately, Eyes Wide Shut is both a fairytale and a satire—a layered narrative challenging viewers to question perception, desire, and reality.
