Many speculate the film reflects Kubrick’s personal life, including his relationship with Scientology and family dynamics, while others say it was truly his vision completed. Released on the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch, the movie resonates with symbolic ties to conspiracy theories surrounding Kubrick himself. It features dark parallels with themes of secrecy, hidden societies, and complex identities. Notably, characters and settings—such as Mentmore Towers, associated with the Rothschilds, and personal cameos by his assistants and family—offer insights into Kubrick’s interest in societal power dynamics. Themes of antisemitism, class, and sexuality are woven throughout. Kubrick left his mark by setting the film in New York but shooting in London, showcasing his dual identity as a Jewish New Yorker and longtime UK resident. With references from Scientology to hidden influences in art, Kubrick seemed to critique patriarchal, conspiratorial structures, suggesting that human biases often stem from insecurities and unacknowledged fears. Eyes Wide Shut serves as a layered and provocative commentary on privilege, ignorance, and our complex inner lives.
