Factorio 0.16 - 1K Science (Finally)
After making an all item train and lots of improvements to my factory, I'm attempting to make 1K science in Factorio again!
After installing new smelters, making improvements to my rail system and various other fixes to my factory, I'm again ready to attempt to produce 1K science per minute.
First, I explain some of the recent fixes to my factory, including re-working a roundabout on my train network, changing the train stackers in front of the new smelters and attempting to spread out the train in my rail system to prevent traffic jams. Finally, I turn off power to the 'all items' area of my base, as it isn't involved in production of science (at least, not science that goes to research), and so turning it off will save quite a bit of power, as we were beginning to run into some power issues last time.
Then I start up a small research just to make sure everything is working smoothly, before starting research on 'Worker Robot Speed 12', which requires 64,000 science. While this should take about an hour, because I'm below 60 updates per second, especially when I start my factory running at full speed, this will take a lot longer in real time.
I show a time-lapse of the research. we start off using 1.3k science per minute. While things go mostly well, there are a few issues. For one, the old steel smelter, which we aren't using anymore, should have space in it's stacker for all the trains that supplied it with ore. However, for some reason, the train still on the rail network want to pull into lanes that are already occupied, causing a traffic jam on the rail network that I have to deal with twice during this run. Additionally, we have a small group of bitters take out a power pole supplying one of the new mines that I have to manually replace.
Despite all that, the run goes well. We slow down a bit from 1.3k science per minute to 1.2k, once we use up what was backed up on the belts, as that is the rate that we are actually producing science at. However, we are able to maintain that rate of production for the rest of the run, and show no signs of of having issues maintaining that rate. The smelters don't get backed up, and it is actually rare for a plate train to pull into a smelter and not be able to begin loading immediately and leave within 15 seconds or so.
So, this was successful, and I should be able to keep this up indefinitely, compared to the previous 1k science test which had a lot of rail network issues that prevented plates from getting where they were needed in a timely manner.
However, this save is getting really hard to play. Rarely am I able to get over 50 UPS when playing, and it is even worse when recording and testing the factory to it's max. There is still one more thing I would like to try, though. I have an empty train, and some new smelters, so I'd like to see what we can do now with all item production. So that will probably be the last video I do with this world.
