Taxman's Retro Sonic is basically what led to Sonic Mania. It had a long history, starting out as a Multimedia Fusion game before Taxman made this 2007 beta on the first iteration of his Retro Engine that his (and Stealth's) official Sonic games including Sonic Mania would later run on. It was then merged with other high profile fan games Sonic XG and Sonic Nexus, forming Retro Sonic Nexus until Taxman was hired by Sega to port Sonic CD to mobile phones.
You can see a lot of Mania DNA here, like the more CD/Saturn like aesthetic, the mixing of elements from Sonic CD and 3&K, and the boss which is almost more of a puzzle boss (you have to stand in the right spot to bait him into attacking you, it's a bit finicky).
