Longplay: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear)

Despite the name, this is not a port of Sonic 2 but a totally new game; this one takes more after Sonic 1's 8-bit version and has similar mechanics, like Chaos Emeralds being hidden in the main levels instead of Special Stages, and boss fights with no rings.
I have a very love/hate relationship with this game. On one hand, it feels a lot closer to the Genesis Sonic games than 1 did, and it has a really cool set of levels and the best soundtrack of the Game Gear games. If you've played Sonic CD, you'll probably notice the Green Hills theme is a chiptune version of You Can Do Anything. You also get a reward for getting all of the emeralds this time around. Normally the game ends at Scrambled Egg, but if you have the first five emeralds, Silver Sonic gives you the 6th and allows you to go to the really weird looking Crystal Egg where you can get the good ending.
On the other hand, the difficulty is all over the place. Most of the game is easier than people make it sound, but it spikes pretty badly in certain spots. The Underground Zone antlion mecha boss is infamous for being really difficult for a first boss, but then there are things like Sky High 2's Chaos Emerald, Green Hills Act 3, Scrambled Egg, and the final boss where you need a lot of memorization. The Game Gear's screen crunch does not help either; the Master System version is a lot easier just because you can see more around you.
Many years later, Sonic Mania would reference this game a few times. Silver Sonic shows up as a mass produced badnik in the Metal Sonic fight, the Sky High hang gliders appear in the Flying Battery to Press Garden transition, and Aqua Lake's giant bubbles would appear in Hydrocity Zone.
