I would've recorded the arcade version first but I don't have a great MAME setup yet. This version is still worth playing though; for its time it's a great port, and it even comes with two different bosses (Stages 4 and 6) that would later be added to the 3DS and Switch versions.
Fantasy Zone was Sega's answer to Gradius. In practice it's very different; you can scroll left and right in endlessly looping levels, trying to destroy enemy bases. It has a cute and abstract art style, and for some reason a somewhat dark story that you don't get hit with until the end. Opa-Opa (the playable ship) is not only alive, but was also Sega's first mascot before either Alex Kidd or Sonic. See, Sega does have other IP's!
Fantasy Zone's real big feature is it's shop. Enemies drop coins, and you can collect these and use them to buy extra parts. You can buy different wings (which increase your speed), shots, and bombs. The game gets a lot easier when you figure out how completely busted the 7 way shot and heavy bomb are, but beware; the more you buy a part, the more expensive it gets.
