Salamander is a Gradius spinoff, one of many. It was known for having a more typical powerup system, co-op play, a mix of horizontal and vertical scrolling levels, and its first level: the inside of a giant organism.
It has something of a weird history; Konami localized it as Life Force and gave it a new story about destroying a space monster from the inside. They brought this version back to Japan, changed all the graphics to a more organic style, and threw in the classic Gradius powerup system. This 8-bit version mixes them all together. The two (admittedly plain) asteroid belt levels were replaced with a high speed level and Egyptian ruins, so it's got better variety!
