Mmm... hmm... yup. Fatal Labyrinth... it is what it is, and you have to take it or leave it. It's one of the earliest console Rogue RPGs ever made (compared at times to NetHack and games of its ilk), and you have to give Sega credit for always trying different things. However, depending on how you look at it, this game certainly isn't a lot of fun to play, even when compared to other games within the genre.

The game has an unusually high challenge curve to an extent for a Rogue RPG. Not only are floors and items random, but item properties are random too. A brown cane may cast a Blizzard Spell one game and do something entirely different the next. You also have to be careful how much food you eat because they can restore different amounts of stock. Being too greedy will make you full, causing you to move really slowly. That can almost mean sudden death in a room with only three or four enemies. It's also not very fun using weapons that miss more than they actually hit, and the enemies can quickly become a handful. The funny thing is, you can run to the top floor and get boosted to max level, where beating the final boss is a piece of cake... but that's only if you can survive thirty floors of torture.

It's interesting to watch your hero change in appearance with new gear and grow in level to become stronger, but the difficulty may turn even fans of Rogue RPGs off. There is a game similar to Fatal Labyrinth I believe on the Game Gear titled "Dragon Crystal". Enjoy.
