FF Type-0 HD - A little something something
End of Bethnel Cavern, 2 lvl56 Behemoth Kings, and a lvl54 Sice. Cheaply and needlessly restored some health in the middle.
I'm surprised by how long I'm still playing this game, not that it's good. The more I play it, the more thoughts materialised. So, my little something something on Type-0.
==============================
The game revolves around 14 characters, each a hyperbolic one-dimensional stereotype.
Story wise, no backstory as to why they are as one-dimensional. I don't agree that each character's a "cosmic chosen/made entity" to be a valid reason, since they are shown to be sentient. Not one of them do I find to be attached to the reality of Type-0's universe, nor do I develop a bond to Class Zero as an entity to carry the story. Lost in the middle is the whole deal about sacrificial summoning and losing memories of the dead.
Combat wise, although they all play slightly differently, I have no chance to formulate any strategy that employs each of their uniqueness to the team's advantage. Since I can only control one character at a time and there is no way to order the other 2 around, I am left at the mercy of the AI. Once the party of 3 is selected for a mission, I can't swap with the reserves until someone got KO'd, so tough luck not bringing anyone with ranged ability.
I don't remember how it was on Dissidia, but the concept of directed attack is lost to Type-0. There are commands executed by direction + action, but the directional input does not obey the relative direction of the target, rather the absolute direction of the screen. For example, I would assume the instruction (up + attack) would mean that I have to tilt my L-stick towards my target, but nope, I actually have to tilt the stick literally upward regardless of where my target is. The game does not auto-correct everything.
As the gimmick, Type-0 has breaksight/killsight (hereby abbreviated as "sight"). These sights pop up when the enemies are vulnerable, be it due to their actions or the party's. Sights occurs ONLY when the target is locked-on for reasons lost to logic. The damage done however, is arbitrary. Trey's MAX-charge is sometime more damaging than landing a sight with said MAX-charge. King can somehow deal about the same damage as Cinque through sights when normally King is an ant's nibble where Cinque is a truck accident. Let's not forget the gimmick enemies that can only be damaged or opened up or killed with sights.
It seems there is another sight, which I call blindsight. As in getting blindsighted for not being able to move the camera to get a better look of the surrounding. Apparently it is a trend to change locked-on target by just moving the R-stick.
Originally a part of Fabula Nova Crystallis, and originally made for phones. Some game design choices however, I don't agree to pin it entirely to Type-0 being a handheld console game. I am intrigued by the Bhunivelze's lore, but when such being is involved so directly in the main story, I question the characters' worth in the plot. That was XIII's arc, Type-0 has the l'Cies and the stupidly over-devotion to the crystals business.
With what's going on with the series, I'm really afraid for the future FFs. Perhaps this is the new path for the series. Perhaps what I'm clinging on to is just for IX and XII to be ported or remastered, and XV to not suck.
