Second part of the Quiet Sands storyline mission. The Llednar part is fairly straightforward and is therefore never recorded on any of my runs (even the crappy ones from almost 8 years ago).
Mateus is known most importantly for his enormous bulk (I remember how long the battle against him took on my ancient speedrun for this game because even Holy Blade didn't pierce him too well - and all other options were just laughable in comparison), but he has diverse offensive options with area and target-all attacks, and some powerful ones too - Breath of God is nearly a OHKO for example, and Thundaga comes close enough too.
As a boss, Mateus can't be affected by laws really, but his minions sure can. Banning Attack is a must really, as Marche can continue attacking with Sonic Boom and the Hunter Combo (this one is mainly there for finishing the boss off reliably) - Sonic Boom also nails some of the minions, though not the Block Arrow ones, and if one dies that we're a tiny bit less likely to lose.
Marche has much better evade than Mateus (comparable to the other Totemas in this regard) so he can sorta rely on dodging frontal magic from the boss, as that's what hits the hardest. Activating Auto-Regen can help in a pinch, but can be endangered by poisoning from Miasma (can be protected from with a Mindu Gem) and getting Zombified by one of the boss's minions.
If a minion is at critical HP (and sometimes with a bit more than that), they can heal themselves with their lv-dependent skill so I had to level up Marche once so that he doesn't get hurt by that in the process, should it happen.
I was lucky since I didn't get zombified in this recording. This fight took quite a lot of attempts, though Mateus is pretty much always a highlight in challenges anyway.
Also, around this point in the challenge I discovered I'm unable to perform a raw save which wasn't an issue several years ago when I was on a different emulator and possibly ROM too. This could undermine my chances to complete the challenge as there is at least one point in the very endgame where you're prompted to save if you want to continue playing, so if anyone could offer tips how to get out of this situation with restarting, that'd be very welcome. I recall this being a pretty common nuisance.
