I believe it's been two months since the last upload in this series... Good Lord, a tortoise uploads faster than me nowadays. I have a bunch of recordings waiting to be edited lying around, but time and motivation are hard to come by these days.
We are once again with Marche who's trying to solo this little game while sticking to the Hunter job. What's so special about this battle? Well, for one, it's the only storyline fight (iirc) which could take place anywhere on the map, leading to different results depending on where you engage the opposing clan (whose members are the same each time nevertheless). Another problem is just how tough these folks are, even with Marche decently levelled as a result of doing a bunch of storyline quests in succession (he matches the leader Paladin in level).
More importantly though, you can't just castrate a huge chunk of the enemy party before the battle even begins by simply stepping on the map on the day with the right bans. The best was something like banning Time Magic? Probably better than nothing considering there's one such caster here (and he can't really kill Marche, but if he's healthy enough you really do notice the fractional chip), but you also lose out on Target Area, which is what Sonic Boom, Hunter job's prized AoE, happens to be.
The enemies are numerous and they can heal too, and stepping on the map when Holy is banned does nothing about the Paladin using Cura and Life... in fact, said Paladin is so bulky that there's little hope of him not walking around and reviving or healing whole groups of injured targets (who should be 2HKO'd in one way or another). Marche only 3HKOs this Paladin, so his best chance at winning this is killing as many people as possible, and then just outstall the Pally.
What the Holy ban does accomplish is deprave the Red Mage from casting Cure. It's less potent than Paladin's white magic but two healers present is way worse than just one. The ban still affects her since she's not sporting a star that makes her immune to being carded by the judge.
Everyone is pretty dangerous with their chip here, and they all don't take too long to reach and start attacking Marche. Particularly annoying would be the Poison spell, because, once poisoned, Marche's Auto-Regen reaction is pretty much entirely nulled as he'll be taking as much damage as he recovers whenever it's his turn. In a long battle, the HP regained is quite large, so this is a big deal and does far more damage in the end than a particularly powerful chip at Marche would cause.
The ending of the fight takes a while - it's technically possible for Marche to Sonic Boom the Paladin and the character he's reviving (always the Black Mage), which would eventually kill Paladin as well, but I had done so many attempts of this that failed somewhere before the end that I was really cautious here - a combo attack on the Black Mage kills him period, guaranteed, while Sonic Boom could always whiff the BM, allowing him to act next turn and probably finish off the wounded Ramza who was around single-digit HP during the last turns of the fight - anything could kill him then.
I either need the Paladin to run out of MP, or Marche to get in an extra turn, which is surely happening considering the Pally moves all the damn time, while Marche needs to stay behind the corpse lest he get whacked at point-blank range. In this video, both of these conditions are granted to me at the same time, resulting in a long-awaited clear.
So sometimes you try to play slower but safer, when previous attempts of all-out-offence and high risk don't really pay off...
