Looking back, it really did take more time than usual to prepare for this. While it's pretty easy to lose to Lucian, the main cause of this has to be Cynthia - taking on her team of 6 scary threats with the added limitations of not using recovery or X items has made her the hardest champion I've ever faced in 0 exp context. The Pokemon we take along have to be just the right ones for Cynthia, and at the same time we want them to be suitable for the four tough type specialists before then. Indeed, some of the options at this point are so good against the first four that we take them along even if they kinda suck against Cynthia.
I found that there's a core that does most of the work in the first four battles around which my whole playstyle is built - these have to be Tentacruel, Floatzel and Bronzong. The former two come at a high level of 50 (so does Pelipper but he really blows), while Bronzong is 13 whole levels below that, yet his bulk, typing and learnset makes him invaluable for providing support of all sort. The other three spots are more or less interchangeable and can be occupied by any combination of Rhyperior, Golem, Machamp, Steelix, Magneton, Medicham, Abomasnow, Staravia, Dusknoir, Gengar, Porygon-Z and probably some others I can't think of right now. The champion fight is decisive in determining whom we choose.

The bug-type specialist isn't so hard. Yanmega is outsped and OHKO'd by Tentacruel's Ice Beam thanks to the Choice Specs boost... with a high roll sometimes. Heracross will switch in next and - guess what - Tentacruel sometimes OHKOs with Hydro Pump AFTER Close Combat's sp. def. fall, but it's locked into Ice Beam right now. We need to switch out to unlock Tenta's control and also force Hera to use CC. There are some bait mons who accomplish this more reliably, but there's no guarantee he'll use the right move. Tentacruel will need another high damage roll to OHKO Heracross, but he can afford to stay in for another turn and try again. Hydro Pump can miss, of course.
Vespiquen is OHKO'd by Rhyperior whom we're taking with us for a certain kind of utility in the last fight. Scizor could appear like a huge problem, what with us lacking a decent fire-type move user, but Splash Plate Floatzel actually 2HKOs him with Waterfall - I was surprised too. As for Drapion, who's not even a bug, Rhyperior's Solid Rock and physical bulk are really humiliating to his attempts to pierce us with Ice Fang.

The ground-type specialist is just asking to be walloped by Tentacruel and Floatzel. 1.2x Waterfall 2HKOs Whicash and is better than any grass-type gimmick you can think of (like Giga Drain Tenta or Natural Gift Grass on someone). Specs Tenta will OHKO Gliscor with Ice Beam easily. Hippowdon will bring permanent sand if a temporary one hasn't been set yet, and this is where Bronzong comes in - Reflect then Rain Dance, and no we don't care about being slept because Tenta will OHKO Hippo with Hydro Pump (Surf would also work but we need to unlearn it later and HM moves don't allow that) and Floatzel will OHKO Rhyperior and Golem with Waterfall thanks to the rain. Did you guys say you were physical tanks?
09:34 Flint
A fire-type specialist; hm, wonder which Pokemon I will use here? Tenta outspeeds Houndoom and that's that; Infernape's EQ barely tickles Rhyperior who KOs back in his counter - oh I had no idea the level gap was a thing.
The last part of the fight is an impressive attempt by Floatzel to just solo the rest of the thing - we're slower so we win the weather game, doubling Floatzel's speed and granting him a boost to Waterfall. He proceeds to OHKO things and, when burnt by Magmortar's ability, nearly achieves the same against Flareon. That's some serious destructive power.
