Tapper's Den. Licinia's flight. What the fresh hell.

"You had every reason not to trust us. We came as trespassers. Invaders."
-Alphinaud

---

-What a gut punch. It's so tragic to see Licinia and her sister fleeing the "savages" she feared, who honestly came to help, only to run straight to a frozen and bloody death.

-And not just tragic, but a legit shock. I honestly thought we'd find them weak and tired but 100% alive. We'd take them back to our camp to heal them up and prove that we're the Good Guys. But NOPE lol.

-At the same time, there's one caveat that's stayed with me. Yes, they're victims, but we heard from the tappers how high-handed they were. I get the sense that they enjoyed (or at the least accepted) the higher status the society granted them.

It's NOT to say they're not victims. They are! They were fed propaganda and just grew up in a general society that valued certain awful things. The only thing I'd push back against is the idea that the citizens of Garlemald are more victims than anyone else.

The Empire dominated and conquered nations all around them, draining their resources and enslaving or all but enslaving their peoples. The imperial citizens are still victims of their state and society, but it's not the same thing.

THAT SAID: I don't think the game is trying to say they are the same or ignoring the Empire's victims. We got Stormblood. We got Sorrows of Werlyt. We got Gaius's arc and Bozja and Rabanastre and and and...

We've seen over and over and over in the game the horrors the Empire has inflicted on others. THIS IS WHY I FIND THIS QUEST SO GREAT! It's not ignoring those victims. Hell, those victims are front and center in the Ilsabard Contingent. This quest is just finally exploring the "regular" Garleans, their mindset and tragedy and life.
