"We are ghosts, you and I. Memories of days gone by."
-Quintus

---

-One of my sessions I've played in XIV. It still hurts (but it hurts so good).

-I felt so bad for Jullus this whole time! You could see how conflicted he was at every step of the journey. When he was told to refuel the armor. When he imprisoned the twins. When he passed on the "Ask the Iyl" message. When he saw his old home.

-THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN ALPHINAUD AND ALISAIE. *inserts a million heart emojis* What brilliant and lovely characters.

-I keep thinking back on why Quintus' death hit me so hard. There's so much tragedy in his pessimism, in his sense of an eternal war. He couldn't philosophically conceive of a world where the Empire's people could retain nobility and dignity in the face of their utter military defeat. He's what Jullus would have become, given another 1-20 years in the old Empire. But Jullus has hope still, as bleak and defeated as he feels right now.

Quintus must have known he was sending his people on what was essentially a suicide mission, but even then, he (like Licinia) saw this as preferable to peace with the savages. There was no real chance at success in their attack on our camp. You could see in the hesitance of Octavia and Marcellinus in receiving their orders, that they knew they were laying their lives down in this attack.

Even on hearing of the other legions' demise, it was so hard for him to not throw his troops' lives away in defense of the homeland. I'm just glad he restrained himself at the end. I sincerely believe that if Quintus then said "screw it, even without the others we must defend our home," those he sent would have willingly died to follow his orders.

-Some relevant lines from a great Tom Waits song:
"They fill their children full of hate to fight an old man's war and die along the road to peace."
