Final Fantasy 10 - Exploiting the loner overdrive mode on arena monsters
https://www.patreon.com/ulillillia --- My old method involved using Bahamut since he gets 255 defense and 255 strength so fast (and 255 magic defense with a little boosting via Kottos and mana distillers). While it's great for early access stuff, it's very slow compared to utilizing the loner overdrive mode and constantly firing off overdrives. This is especially useful for some of the most annoying monsters that have time-wasting counter attacks. In this video, I feature 3 such monsters: greater sphere (for luck spheres to max luck, and the trickiest one), earth eater (never ending flare counterattacks when knocked over), and ironclad (has a ton of HP and a very high defense so it takes forever).
First things first - get the loner overdrive mode. Unfortunately, you can't get it via the arena, only in random encounters or boss fights. Thus, just head outside and find a flame flan or something that won't cause status effects (auto-regen takes care of any damage and flame flan can be slowed if needed). Make the other 2 characters escape. From there, just defeat any more dangerous enemies and leave the flame flan by itself. Next, simply mash the /\ button to defend until you see that Tidus has learned "loner" overdrive mode. With auto-haste, it's even faster and takes but a few seconds to do. Once you have it, destroy the flame flan and return to the arena and save.
For greater sphere, first thing you do with Tidus is cast protect. This will cut the damage from the hydraulic press counterattack in half and will make it survivable. You will need at least 4 uses of cheer afterward to ensure you can finish it off in 2 attacks (so you only get countered once). If, at any time, it's the enemy's turn next, defend, as that will cut the damage from hydraulic press in half should it decide to use that for it's normal turn. After being hit with hydraulic press as the counterattack, heal right away. From there, fire off blitz ace one last time and it'll go down (but only if you have max strength and enough luck to guarantee critical hits).
For earth eater, you don't need anything, though you could cast shell. Just keep firing off slice and dice as soon as you can (defend or steal otherwise, lancet if you need emergency MP). 4 uses with max strength and luck (no need for cheer) and earth eater goes down.
For ironclad, you don't need anything either as it's quite weak with physical damage with 255 defense as auto-regen will take care of it. Ironclad will take all MP away but there's no need for it. Just fire off slice and dice about a dozen times and it goes down, overkill guaranteed (with at least max strength).
Similar tactics can be used for most other mosters in the arena, especially the more useful stat sphere ones.
