So, there's a point where you can check and change Aerith's materia before she joins up for this fight; we take advantage of that, otherwise you can't change her materia until after the fight. By the way, Aerith's innate ability is Geo Stance, which allows the flower girl to absorb elemental attacks as long as she is defending; though that isn't relevant for this particular battle, it will be later on down the line.

Anywho, Rude can be, well, pretty rude - no pun intended. He has slightly over 1,000 HP and hits pretty hard with his physical attacks, Grand Spark and Fire. Aerith only has 357 HP so she can't take too many hits before going down. Thankfully, Aerith starts out with a Barrier materia equipped, which will help out a lot here, cutting Rude's physical damage by 33% instead of half like it is in vanilla FF7. Back row reduces damage by a further 10% in this mod. At first, Rude will attack, use Grand Spark or Fire. Fire easily cuts Aerith's HP by a third, so we have to keep healed up. Rude's physical attack can also critically strike. We use Ice here since it is the most MP efficient, unlike Fire or Bolt (though they do more damage).

When Rude gets low on HP, he uses Turk Cure, which heals him for a good chunk of his HP and inflicts berserk status on him. Now we definetly have to stay healthy and keep Barrier active to reduce damage taken. After running out of MP for Ice, I swap to using Grenades as I didn't want to waste an Ether here.
