Ultima in the main game of ff2 has a crazy formula.In short, you're supposed to cycle through all your weapons and 16 spells to level them up to have this playable (which I had to edit the fandom after the vid as hours later you get Leon, who satisfies this requirement upon joining, so my work is for nothing lol how cryptic): https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Ultima_(Final_Fantasy_II)?so=search

I do find the dawn of souls mod of balance hack to be interesting. I think it changed some magic drops and made leveling them faster, though you can use tomes or spam esuna mid battle to level for petrify.

I still had to do my early mysidia strategy of giving Maria an ice bow and cycling when it is power crept, helps buff ultima, though I should have given her instead of Minwu, teleport to indirectly buff ultima. I believe Minwu could use teleport in soul of rebirth for some difficult enemies that you rely on equipment drops for. https://youtu.be/dihtfOpu3LA

Minwu's Ultima is far better, based on spirit in soul of rebirth (unique post-game dungeon for dead characters though Ultima weapon is way too tough without prep/exploits) and it helps to give Ricard (who surprisingly has high spirit which would help if using holy and a white robe as well) the Ripper knife that was dropped in the cyclone dungeon as it ignores defense, to give to Josef.

Both Josef and Minwu die before the party has access to anything good to equip excluding holy (by early mysidia trick though the ogrekiller axe is probably only useful vs gigas bosses). The game lies about unarmed being useful) with another ancient sword, or blood sword if you feel lucky or prepped.

Saint's spirit had my holy double in damage to 1500 while level 12 ultima did 700 (which wasn't bad given I had level 3-4 as a spell/weapon minimum with level 6 for several spells). There is also sage's wisdom for flare to max out intelligence, which is far easier if you want a magic strategy vs final boss in the main game.

Surprisingly, you could give Ricard ultima from the main game (he's already at a high level with swords and spears, and just needs to learn magic before dying), though I haven't tested it.

I'm glad to make a playlist and finish making helpful videos for this (the pixel remaster omits and worsens many things like Esuna/Teleport https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_II_version_differences#Final_Fantasy_II_Pixel_Remaster ) and final fantasy tactics as it was far better than discussing the quality of the game with uninformed hype.
