PREVIOUSLY:
As the others wander around the city, Zidane participates in the card tournament and beats the champion, who is none other than the regent himself, to become the overall winner. After the event, Eiko rushes to see Zidane and according to her moogle friend, something bad is happening at Alexandria. The party then re-gathers and takes the Hilda Garde 2 to return to the kingdom.

At the castle, Garnet hears chaos surrounding the kingdom, and sees that Bahamut has been summoned to attack Alexandria. The princess deploys their troops to their respective assignments, while Captain Steiner and General Beatrix fend off the mist monsters in the city.

Suddenly, Garnet's pendant starts to shine, leading her to a balcony, and a stairway to the altar of Alexander appears before her. As she stood on the center of the altar, Eiko, onboard the experimental airship of the regent which operates without mist, leaps down to Garnet as their holy shards attract each other, reacting to the master eidolon's threat. The two summoners prayed on the altar, summoning the holy guardian eidolon Alexander, spreading its wings to protect the kingdom, and defeating Bahamut in the process.

Kuja, in awe of its power, calls for the airship Invincible to enslave it. However, a mysterious elderly man named Garland appears aboard the Invincible, reproaching Kuja for his rebellion. A sonic wave from the airship then renders Alexander powerless. With the castle collapsing, the princess stumbles and was about to fall to her doom, when suddenly, Zidane appears out of nowhere, and leaps in to save her. Before the two could have a conversation, the Invincible releases a powerful blast, destroying Alexander completely, and a huge part of the city with it, while Kuja, left without a single eidolon, flees.
