PREVIOUSLY:
Zidane and his companions arrive at Esto Gaza, where according to the priest there, Kuja and his minions had gone up to Mount Gulug with the captured Eiko.

After traversing through the extinct volcano, Zidane and the others reach the heart of Mount Gulug, where they see Zorn and Thorn, who are now serving Kuja, attempting to extract the eidolons inside Eiko, the process fails however, as Mog uses her powers to protect the summoner. Through the power of Trance, which is a surge of powerful emotions that momentarily enhances one's inner capabilities, Mog reveals herself to be an eidolon of her own, and uses her abilities to knock out the court jesters.

Having witnessed the power of Trance, Kuja deduces he no longer need a new eidolon after all, formulating a plan to assimilate enough souls to ultimately enter a form of permanent Trance. Kuja then flees the scene, and leaves a combined entity of Zorn and Thorn to deal with the heroes, which they were able to defeat. Vivi tried tracking down Kuja, but he had already escaped, instead, he found the black mages who were left behind after Kuja told them that everything was just a trick, and that he no longer has any use for them, which enraged Vivi even more.

After all the animosities, a female voice can be heard from a nearby door, which the party goes to check.
