PREVIOUSLY:
In Terra, the party meets a Genome girl, who leads them to the Genome village of Bran Bal. Stationed outside the village is the airship Invincible, catching a glimpse of its red eye, Garnet reclaims her memories of the time the airship destroyed Madain Sari and passes out. Zidane then carries the unconscious Garnet to the village inn to allow her a place to rest. The party is confounded by the sight of everyone in the village looking like Zidane, with yellow hair and a tail, but lacks any personality at all, reminiscent of the black mages from the airship earlier in Lindblum.

While the others take care of Garnet, Zidane meets up with the Genome girl, she reveals to him that he is also a Genome from Terra, hence the similarities in the physical features. However, unlike the others who are created as soulless beings, Zidane is a special one, a Genome that was created for a greater purpose.

According to the Genome girl, Terra has been consuming planets to survive, and this time, Gaia is their target. Garland's mission is to restore the Terran civilization by absorbing Gaia and use the Genomes as vessels for the souls of its people. Confused with what he has learned, Zidane follows her to a path to meet with Garland himself in order to learn of the truth.
