PREVIOUSLY:
Zidane and the others travel to the top of the Pandemonium, where they meet Garland in his observatory. The two sides had an exchange of words before finally engaging in a fight. Garland demonstrated his abilities, further proving why he was chosen to be the overseer of Terra, but Zidane and his companions ultimately won the battle.
Seeing Garland on his last legs, Kuja, having successfully retrieved the Invincible, takes advantage of Garland's weak state and attempts to deal the final blow to him, but he decides to deal with Zidane and his friends first. Showcasing his new mastery of Trance, which was achieved by absorbing the amassed souls within the airship and using the soul of a hateful person, Queen Brahne, as catalyst, Kuja dispatches the party with an Ultima spell and declares that he will rule both Terra and Gaia. Kuja then kicks his old master off Pandemonium's precipice to his death.
Overjoyed by his accomplishments, Kuja threatens to finish off Zidane and his allies, when suddenly, a voice echoes within the observatory. Garland remains as an omniscient voice, and from beyond the grave, tells Kuja his new-found goal is for naught, as a limit on his lifespan was set when he was created, and his demise is fast approaching, seemingly like the black mages that he all so despised.
Kuja's euphoria turns into rage, and in his vanity, deduces that the world does not deserve to exist without him. Kuja then unleashes waves after waves of Ultima spells, completely obliterating the Terran edifices one by one. Garnet accompanies Zidane to evacuate the resident Genomes while the others set up the Invincible for their escape. Seeing no purpose in surviving anymore, the Genome girl, who reveals her name as Mikoto, is convinced by Zidane to flee with them, and try finding her own meaning of life. Everyone climbs aboard the Invincible, and manages to escape before Terra is completely engulfed in flames.
Back in their home world, the party notices that the Mist has returned, now enveloping the entirety of Gaia, flowing once more from the Lifa Tree. They dispatch the Genomes to the black mages' care and attempts to make their way to stop Kuja for hopefully the final time.
