Previously, we finished the prologue in Nalbina Fortress. Then, we assumed control of our viewpoint character, Vaan, in the Royal City of Rabanastre. Vaan has taken on his first hunt, "Red & Rotten in the Desert". He made his way to Rabanastre's Eastgate. Now, he must hunt the Rogue Tomato in the Dalmasca Estersand.

After resuming, Vaan exits east to the Dalmasca Estersand (time 1:01). A brief scene introduces the player to the Dalmasca Estersand area.

Then, we gain control of Vaan in the zone called the Stepping. Common monsters in this zone include Cactites, Wolves, and, in the west, Cockatrices. The Cactites are not normally aggressive, but surrounding Cactites will attack if they see someone attack one of their fellows. Beware the Wild Saurian. It is not aggressive, but it is too strong for Vaan at his current level. To make matters worse, it can cannibalize the Wolves in the area to increase its levels.

Since the treasure coffers in this game generally appear at random and do not always have fixed contents, I will not list them. I will only list those that have guaranteed or important items, such as Ribbons.

During the exploration, Vaan reaches Level 2 (time 3:56).

Directly northeast of the exit from Rabanastre, Vaan finds the Rogue Tomato for "Red & Rotten in the Desert" (time 4:15). There are no special conditions for making this vile veggie/fruit appear. When its health is depleted by half, though, it will flee and jump off the ledge. Vaan must chase it down quickly, or its health will regenerate.

Vaan easily defeats the Rogue Tomato (time 5:22). A brief scene takes place afterwards. Vaan finds and acquires some Galbana Lilies.

Afterwards, Vaan continues exploring the Stepping.

In the north, Vaan exits to the Outpost (time 11:28). This is a village zone with NPCs to talk to. There is even an Energetic Child that offers a place to rest for 100 gil. There are Mysterious Glints that can be examined for small amounts of gil. The Imperial Watch are currently blocking the northeast exit.

There is a guaranteed one-time treasure in the east of the Outpost (time 13:56). It is a Firefly, an accessory that reduces the EXP its wearer earns to 0. This is for all you low-level gamers out there. Of course, you also need to get the license for it.

Vaan returns to the Stepping (time 14:59). He finishes filling in the zone map and collecting available treasures.

Vaan reaches Level 3 (time 17:36).

Vaan returns to Rabanastre's Eastgate (time 20:41).

He talks to Kytes (time 21:27). Kytes has some dialogue.

Then, a scene takes place (time 21:42). Poor Vaan loses his Galbana Lilies, but at least that's all he loses, thanks to Migelo.

A cinematic scene takes place in Rabanastre's streets (time 23:57). The new Consul gives an impressive speech, but there is something about him that I just do not trust.

Another cutscene with Vayne takes place afterwards (time 27:29). I do not envy Migelo's position. Sounds like Vaan still has some things to figure out.

Then, there is another scene with Vaan and Penelo in the North End (time 29:31). Something tells me that Penelo telling Vaan to stay out of trouble is an exercise in futility. After they part ways, we catch sight of a suspicious group of Bangaa.

We regain control of Vaan in the North End (time 31:09). He is now free to go to Lowtown or leave Rabanastre at will.

Vaan heads southeast to the East End and enters the Sandsea.

In the Sandsea tavern, he reports in to Tomaj (time 31:53). "Red & Rotten in the Desert" complete! Vaan earns 300 gil, 2 Potions, and 1 Teleport Stone. Tomaj also suggests that Vaan visit a certain Bangaa in front of a building in the North End.

After chatting with the folks in the Sandsea, Vaan visits Batahn's Technicks. The NPCs in the technick shop offer some useful advice.

Vaan talks to Batahn (time 35:00). He sells off some loot for gil. Then, he buys the Libra technick for 400 gil.

On the Shikari License Board, Vaan spends 25 LP on the Libra license (time 35:25). He can now use the Libra technick. This technick puts the Libra effect on the user. While in effect, Libra shows the target enemy's weaknesses, HP total, and level, unless the enemy is immune to it.
