A long time ago, I wondered if it would be possible to complete Thracia 776 without killing any enemies. The status screen tracks how many enemies you've captured and killed, so it seemed like an interesting idea to try one day.

I recently completed a playthrough doing exactly that, but part of the way through, another idea occurred to me. What if you complete the game without killing any enemies, but while also minimizing the capture counter? This playthrough is the result.

Before I start explaining various parts though, I should explain upfront that this was played on an emulator with HEAVY use of savestates for level up stat gains, lucky dodges, and stuff like that. It also wasn't intended to be an optimized playthrough, so don't expect clean inputs or efficient routing. This was meant more as a proof of concept to show that it can be done. The idea is ridiculous, so I think it was worth demonstrating.

It's also worth noting that there are enemies in this game that have 20 build, so they can't be captured. If that enemy happens to be a boss that I need to defeat, that is a problem. Luckily, there's this wonderful thing called the Berserk staff. By using it on a nearby enemy (or the boss himself, in one case), I can have the enemies deal with the problem without increasing the counter. Note that the restriction is to keep the counter low, not to avoid unnecessary kills. If enemies or NPCs want to fight amongst themselves, that's not my problem.

In total, there are only seven enemies that I'm forced to deal with to finish the game: Wiseman, Bachus, Rifis, Robos, Rumei, Largo, and Salem. Every other enemy can either be avoided, tricked into running away, or dealt with by friendly fire.

With all of that out of the way, on to the chapter notes:

Chapter 1 (00:14): Eyvale is a great distraction for Dagda and Leaf.

Chapter 2 (03:40): Basically a speedrun.

Chapter 2x (05:48): Dagda and Leaf take the long way around to avoid a chokepoint, so it's Eyvale's job to lure the enemies away from the bridge.

Chapter 3 (12:27): Rifis grinding time, because thieves are the MVPs for this challenge. Killing off Tania was a bad idea that actually ended up working out. I didn't want 8x, but I also didn't need 21x.

Chapter 4 (34:33): Lara grinding time. Recruited Dalsin for kicks, but I should've skipped 4x. Asvel was useless.

Chapter 4x (1:06:56): Tricky start, but nothing interesting after that.

Chapter 5 (1:17:37): This chapter is always a slog. The restrictions don't help.

Chapter 6 (1:36:48): More recruitment just for fun, but otherwise the same as always.

Chapter 7 (1:46:09): The Myrmidon group is annoying. They try to escape to the north once disarmed, so the chokepoint becomes an issue.

Chapter 8 (1:57:02): This seemed tricky at first, but luckily Karin can stealth drop Leaf and Fin.

Chapter 9 (2:00:37): 20 movement is fun. Whoosh!

Chapter 10 (2:04:25): Leaf training for later while enemies tend to stand still.

Chapter 11 (2:24:45): Could've been faster with an unarmed Rifis, but meh. Didn't want 11x anyway.

Chapter 12 (2:41:55): Salem is the last required capture. Lara handles that easily.

Chapter 12x (2:44:12): Parn gets STRONG here while I wait for extra loot to show up.

Chapter 13 (3:00:46): Whoosh! Luckily that armor retreats once disarmed.

Chapter 14 (3:06:38): Tina training time. She's VERY good for this run.

Chapter 15 (3:28:04): Same as always. Route B is mandatory though.

Chapter 16B (3:31:53): Berserk staff get! Otherwise, annoying chokepoints. Should've gotten the Wind Sword before leaving, but alas.

Chapter 17B (3:51:33): I had to drain the ballistae because Amalda sucks at dodging.

Chapter 18 (4:10:55): I hate Xavier's friends. They don't leave once disarmed.

Chapter 19 (4:56:41): Same as always.

Chapter 20 (5:04:22): Baraat becomes vulnerable to status effects once he starts moving. Berserk enemies take heat from everybody around them. I think you see where this is going.

Chapter 21 (5:26:43): That armor is a champion. Took a lot of effort to get this result, but it's so satisfying.

Chapter 22 (5:31:33): Reinhardt, surprisingly, is not a champion. It was a real struggle to get him to survive AND dodge Blizzard.

Chapter 23 (5:36:55): Essentially a speedrun.

Chapter 24 (5:40:40): Galzus is very annoying. He either kept failing to kill easy enemies, or kept going after enemies not named Leidrick. I had to go through some hurdles to change his target. In hindsight, taking the Lopto Sword was pointless. It's fun to humiliate Leidrick though.

Chapter 25 (5:51:50): What an absolute mess. You can clearly tell that I was changing routes as I went when it comes to Beldo. I was hoping for a one-two combo with Hel and a Berserker, but ended up just luring Zwei to Beldo's group instead. It was much cleaner at that point.

Results (6:18:00): After all of this effort to spare my enemies, the game rewards me with a D rank. How ungrateful.

Hopefully you enjoy the video though. :)
